Here is the cover that made me actually listen to the lyrics:
This song starts off whiney and then takes a dramatic leap to the ridiculous. The song starts off complaining that the girl had her eyes open during their first kiss. He gives her all he has and she throws it in the trash. Okay, I can see why you're upset, that is kind of a bitch move. But then he finishes with "To give me all your love is all I ever asked."
Okay, back up. A girl does not have to love you because you buy her things. And honestly, I think you're just really bad at picking up on social cues. Her eyes were open when you kissed, because she's not into you. She threw out what you gave her because she's not into you. Seriously, take a hint.
This makes the chorus completely ridiculous. I get that you are trying to make a point about how much she means to you, but in what world would you ever need to catch a grenade, throw your hand in front of a blade, or jump in front of a train? Who are you? Four? Are you dating Tris?
The last line kills me: "But you won't do the same." You're mad because this girl won't die for you? You insinuate that she is from hell, because she won't sacrifice everything for you. Do you want to know why she ripped the brakes out of your car? Because you are stalking her.
Any ridiculous songs you love? Or love to hate?

Bahahaha I'm cracking up. That's quite a rant, Steph! "Are you Four?"
ReplyDeleteI really hate the message behind this song. It's the argument NICE GUYS (TM) make about finishing last. NO. You are not a NICE GUY (TM). If you are making a girl feel guilty for not liking you, if you are pursuing a girl after repeated no's, if you somehow feel entitled to this girl's love - you are NOT a nice guy!
HAHAHAHA!!! I love this post! So funny! This song is soooo totally ridiculous!
ReplyDeleteI used to do this assignment when I taught Romeo and Juliet to 8th graders where they had to bring in a song that Romeo would sing to Juliet... and this is totally a song they would have picked. Bah ha ha! (I don't like Romeo much. Too emo and dramatic)
Lol this is awesome! "Are you Four?" Love it! I never think that much about song lyrics ever, I just sing along with them blindly. I'll never look at Grenade the same again :)
ReplyDelete"And sometimes I say "sometimes" when I'm talking about a specific event that happened this week" LOL!
ReplyDeleteVery funny post, Steph! And yes, I've always thought this song was a bit over dramatic. I know there are other songs that I've thought were really ridiculous before but of course I can't think of any of them now.... :(
