Looks From Books: Splintered by A.G. Howard (Part 1)
Looks from books is a semi-regular feature at The Fake Steph Dot Com where I explore book inspired fashion. Today, I made a look for Alyssa Gardner from Splintered by A. G. Howard. Full confession, I haven't finished it yet. I had to put it down to read books that had a "read by" date, but I knew from the very beginning that Alyssa was the PERFECT character to feature here. When I skimmed through what I had already read, I got sucked back in and I can't wait to dive back into the story tomorrow.
Alyssa's character is just so interesting. I'm fascinated by her, even though she is an artist whose medium is dead bugs. *shudder* I forgive her though. If I heard bugs talking, I'd find excuses to kill them, too. Alyssa has been pushed to the fringes of the social scene and, like many high schoolers, adapts a wardrobe that makes it seem like her isolation is a choice. Plus, it doesn't hurt that her style allows for her to wear cool fingerless gloves, a fashion accessory that covers her embarrassing scars.
She's sweet and innocent, but she's plagued by dark nightmares, so her style reflects both the girl she naturally is and the girl she is turning into because of her unusual circumstances. She does the dark shadow cat-eye thing with fun colored hair extensions and silver lip gloss. Personally, I'm not a fan of silver lip gloss, so I opted for a clear gloss. It suits her look better. Nobody wants their eyes and lips competing for attention.
As for the clothes, I created a wearable look from Alyssa's style elements at the skatepark and at the mental hospital where she is visiting her mom. The purple skinny jeans probably aren't the best choice to actually skateboard in, but they look cute with the barbed wire t-shirt. I gave her DCs because, I love DCs, and a helmet because she actually wears one. In my mind, she has the kind of edgy look that doesn't actually scare parents away.

I think a part of me has always wished I could pull off that kind of style but alas...I never really could.
ReplyDeleteI love the phone case! It so fits her art! I can't wait to read this book, too.
ReplyDeleteI love love love the phone case! And the t-shirt is super cool. I'm totally intrigued by Alyssa's character now that I know she makes art from dead bugs. So freaking cool!
ReplyDeleteThis look made me wish to be a teen again, and not have to dress like a professional grown-up person... haha.
