Book:The Dark Light by Sarah WalshSummary (from GoodReads): Mia is torn between two guys—and two worlds—in this epic, romantic fantasy.
Mysterious lights have flickered above Crownsville for as long as Mia can remember. And as far as she’s concerned, that’s about the only interesting thing to happen in her small town.
That is, until Sol arrives. Mia’s not one to fall for just any guy, but she can’t get Sol—or the brilliant tattoo on his back—out of her mind.
Then Mia’s brother goes missing, and Mia’s convinced that Sol knows more than he’s sharing. But getting closer to Sol means reevaluating everything Mia once believed to be true. Because Sol’s not who Mia thought he was—and neither is she.
Thoughts: Let me start out by saying that I think certain readers will LOVE this one. I wanted to. But I didn't. I just expected more from it. There is a sexy guy with secrets and a romance that is impossible for several different reasons (that we don't learn all at once). Plus a mystery, a war, a new world, and an adventure. There is so much going for it, but I it left me feeling stretched a little too thin.
All of the characters are easy to like, especially Mia with her fierce loyalty to and love for her little brother. However--and this is going to sound crazy--they were all too nice. Everyone wanted to help Mia and I never felt like Mia struggled on her journey. Things seemed too easy. We also spend a lot of time getting to know Mia's school friends before she journeys into a new world, where they play no role whatsoever. It almost felt like I was starting the story over.
Moments I Loved: (Minor spoiler). Mia reuniting with her dad and growing to respect him.
WTF Moments: The end, when Mia makes a sacrifice. I *get* it, but I think she was onboard WAY too quickly, which ultimately made the moment fall flat for me.
Overall: It's a fun book full of adventure and romance; I think a lot of readers will adore it. It wasn't for me, but it is still the sexiest cover of the year.

Nice review! This sounds pretty interesting.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the review, Steph. I haven't heard much about this one but I like the cover a lot :)
ReplyDeleteAww, sorry it wasn't what you'd hoped. I have been eyeing this one for a while.
ReplyDeleteHappy reading,

Eh, I think I can skip this one. Also, where's the other guy? The summary mentions that she's torn between to guys, but then only mentions Sol, so it's easy to see who the winner of this little love triangle is going to be. If Boy #2 doesn't even make the summary then there can't be that much going on!
ReplyDeletethe summery of the review does make it sound interesting, but I'm betting I could probably skip this one too. For some reason this one is making me think of Hush Hush and I didn't like that one. If I'm going to fall for dark and mysterious I'm going to fall for Cassel Sharpe
