Music.
I know, I know... let me explain. I don't mind a little introductory jig or what have you. But it drives me crazy when the music overlaps the narration. Especially the end! I don't hear well and it completely ruins a book for me, because instead of being able to enjoy the last few sentences of a book, I am straining just to hear the words. If I'm driving, I have to pull over to the side of the road so that I can listen to the end again.
Does this ruin a book completely for me? No. I listened to The Scorpio Races on audio (my review) and it is my favorite read of 2012. Do you have any pet peeves or deal-breakers when it comes to audiobooks?

To be honest a deal breaker for me is the reader. I cannot listen if I don't like the way the reader sounds. I have been trying audiobooks since like 1999 when I listened to a GREAT book on tape. Since then I have hated audiobooks - none of them have been as good as The Trumpet of the Swan. LOL!!!! On a serious note though if I don't find the narrator/reader's voice strong or intriguing or kinda similar to the character I doze off and get bored quickly...
ReplyDeleteI haven't listened to any audiobooks with music other than a short intro - but I think it would definitely annoy me too. Sometimes, I don't even lie sound effects - I don't like anything that's going to take me out of the story.

The reader is very important to me. It used to be just the voice, but it's now become the "acting". I liked the voice of the narrator for Shatter Me, but she over-acted the hell out of the book, and it almost ruined it for me. I can still hear her voice in my head when I think of the book... it haunts me.
ReplyDeleteMusic doesn't bother me too bad- I love the audio for The Historian and it used music to set the mood, which makes me really love listening to it during Halloween.
What?! I didn't even know there was music in audio books. That would drive me crazy!
ReplyDeleteI haven't listened to tons of audio books, but I still have heard enough to know EXACTLY what you mean. When you're a teacher, the kids think the music means the book is done even if they're supposed to be following along in the book and should see there's still several sentences left to go!
ReplyDeleteBut my biggest deal breaker is definitely the reader/narrator. Though I think the quality of audio book readers is getting better.

Music doesn't bother me, and in the case of If I Stay and Where She Went I felt like the music made me love the books more! But I do get your point and I agree that I have to pay closer attention to the beginning and ending because it can be too loud sometimes.
ReplyDeleteFor me, a bad narrator can ruin an audio book for me. I can't think of any other deal breakers off the top of my head, but I'm sure that I have more.
