Looks From Books: The Vicious Deep Part 2
Looks from books is a semi-regular feature where I explore book inspired fashion. This is part two of looks from The Vicious Deep by Zoraida Cordova. Part one explored looks inspired by Cordova's mermaids. If you missed it, you can check out part 1 or read my review.
This week, I created a look for Layla from The Vicious Deep. Where the mermaids are frivolous fun, and somewhat shallow, Layla is the down-to-earth girl next door. She and Tristan grew up together and now they both lifeguard and compete on the swim team. She wears t-shirts from famous Coney Island Souvenir shops and is comfortable just hanging out with the guys.
Sure, she knows how to be girly, like when she and Maddy give Tristan the cold shoulder (which he totally deserved). But she's practical and no nonsense. She's the girl who ends up an uninvited human in a mermaid world, because she snuck (sneaked?) after Tristan. Not because she's madly in love with him. Not because she didn't want to be left behind and miss the adventure. Because she wanted to keep Tristan out of trouble.
For me, Layla is a breath of fresh air in a book market dominated by young women who have nothing going on in their lives beyond questionable romantic relationships and spend their time waiting to be saved.

I like the Betty Boop shirt and the necklace the best. And I wouldn't mind a new backpack to take to NYC... hmmm... Good styling, Steph!
ReplyDeleteI love these posts!
ReplyDeleteI really like that necklace, too. And the shoes. Also, the lifeguard hoodie.
I like the shoes! I'm starting to think I need to read these books.
ReplyDeleteI love, love, love that seashell necklace! I want it! And I think you captured a laid-back, real girl look perfectly. Layla looks like someone I'd want to kick back with on a sunny summer day!
