Top Ten (Tuesday) Characters I'd Like To Change Places With

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish that combines lists and books.  This weeks topic is... characters I'd like to trade places with for 24 hours.

I totally wish I could go to a real speakeasy and party the night away in 1920's style...

All of these feature a really special school and I WANT TO GO!

I want to make out with Sean Kendrick and also ride a water horse (with Sean there, obviously).

I want to live in a museum:

 I miss England:

I totally wish I lived the exciting life of a jewel thief:

This is the first time that coming up with EXACTLY 10 was easy.  Usually I have far too many.  Based on my list, am I crazy?

Nowhere To Run by Nancy Bush

Book:  Nowhere To Run by Nancy Bush
To be Published July 31, 2012 by Kensington Publishing Corp.

Summary: Liv receives a package from her dead mother shortly after her twenty-fifth birthday.  Almost immediately, a gun man shoots up her place of employment while she is out to lunch.  She goes on the run, convinced that these two events are linked and determined to prove that someone is out to kill her.

Characters:  Liv comes off as crazy, but it is very clear that she is damaged, instead of insane.  I was a little disappointed, because I love when thrillers keep me in the dark about the main characters sanity but for the most part I was able to root for her and I enjoyed watching her battle her dark family history.  I was surprised that there were three other major points of view.  My favorite is Auggie.  He's the love interest and an undercover cop who falls for Liv (she has a SEVERE dislike for the police).  His point of view added a layer of tension that made the story even more enjoyable and I loved being inside his head.

The two other points of view didn't work as well for me.  Auggie's sister, September, is also a police officer working Liv's case.  On one hand, I enjoyed seeing what was going on with the case, but the most interesting part, for me, is the secondary case she starts working on, which turns out to be set up for the next book in the series instead of a related subplot.  I also didn't like September's partner, Gretchen.  Gretchen is a b**** with little regard for how she affects the people around her.  She acts just like the cop who traumatized Liv as a child and I spent most of the book waiting for Gretchen and Liv to meet.  I was more than disappointed that they didn't.

We also spend a little bit of time in the killer's head. Understanding the killer is usually something I love, but the switch from third person-past tense to first person-present tense really threw me off.  Mostly, it established the killer as someone mentally deranged and for me, that made it less scary.

Plot/Pacing:  The first few scenes of the book were slow for me, but once the massacre happens at Liv's workplace, the book takes off.  I would have liked to see more evidence and clues throughout the book.  Liv's proof never felt like more than rumor and speculation, which prevented the mystery from fully coming together for me.  The end felt very abrupt, but I'm invested enough in these characters that I want to read the next book.

Moments I Loved:  I loved the moments between Auggie and Liv.  Liv is so damaged and closed off that it was wonderful watching her learn how to trust again.

WTF Moments:
While the romance is my favorite part of the book, it also weirded me out a bit.  Auggie is an undercover cop, so his allowing things to get so far with Liv felt inappropriate.  I didn't understand why he didn't get in trouble when they got back to the station.  Are there not rules about relationships between police officers and witnesses?

Overall:  This book wasn't for me, because I have very specific tastes when it comes to thrillers (likeable villains and a hero who struggles to stay good).  However, I think it will be highly enjoyable to those who devour thrillers and like straight-forward characters.

St. Vladimir's Summer School Week Four: Blood Promise by Richelle Mead

ST-VLADIMIR-vampire-academy-14330157-800-531

Week Four of St. Vladimir's Summer School is here and, like usual, I am working to deadlines when everyone else is working ahead.  I have my excuses (book didn't come until Friday, same day as my brother arrived home on leave), but I am only 2/3 of the way through book four and I am now in DETENTION.  Suggestions on how I should serve it in the comments.

This week we have lost the wonderful Ashelynn in our read through of the Vampire Academy series, but she's read through the series already so no detention for her.  Jen Ryland, Jen from Owl Read It, and Lauren from The Headless Owl are participating this week and I bet they all read the book, too.
Total Progress: 3.67/6

Vocab - (Confused?  Check out my previous posts.)
Dream Walk - A Spirit magic skill that allows the spirit user to meet other people in dreams.  Adrian uses this to communicate with Rose.

Alchemists - Humans with tattoos charmed by the Moroi who run interference between the vampire world and humans.  They think all vampires are evil, not just strigoi, and work to keep the vampire world hidden in order to protect the human race.

Blood-whores - Dhampirs who reject being guardians and let Moroi drink their blood during sex (totally taboo).  Usually these are single-mothers who live in communes, raising their children together.

Book: Blood Promise (Vampire Academy #4) by Richelle Mead

Summary: Rose has left St. Vladimir's and travelled to Russia to hunt down and kill the man she loves who is now a Strigoi (evil vampire).

Brief thoughts:  So far, this is my favorite book of the series.  It is definitely the most character driven of the books so far and I am loving every minute of it.  Rose is seeing the world for the first time instead of accepting what she has always been told.  We get to see how someone could become a blood-whore and I especially love Rose meeting other reckless dhampirs.  We get a view of life outside of being a guardian and I think it is forcing Rose to grow up.  For the first time in the series, she's actually not whining.

I like Dmitri way better as a Strigoi (sorry, Ashelynn), but it rips my heart out to watch Rose mourn for him.  I wanted so badly for Rose to stay with his family and find peace, but I knew that would never actually happen.  I love Adrian and as much as I wanted Rose to be jealous that he was showing interest in Avery, that isn't why she lashes out at him.  She does it because she is alone and hurting and hates the idea of losing someone else who cares about her (she doesn't have many).  Her entire life is up in the air and she is resistant to change.  But I loved this, because if she had actually been interested in Adrian (who I LOVE) while she was grieving for Dmitri (who I don't), I would have been pissed.

Rose's dark brooding is lightened by the arrival of Sydney, the alchemist who is the main character in the spin-off series, Bloodlines.  I LOVED her and can't wait to get to her books.  Lissa's storyline is incredibly frustrating to read, because, while I love knowing what's going on with her, I want Rose to be able to do something to help her friend.  Watching it through the bond makes me feel completely helpless and it freaks me out.  As always, the book could use more Adrian.

What I learned about Romance (after all, we are in summer school):
First love feels the same whether it is real or not.  This one may be kind of depressing, but there are some dark things going on in these books.  When Rose fell for Dmitri, her love blinded her and she ignored all the warning signs and kept it a secret and basically did all kinds of things I didn't approve of.  In Blood Promise, Dmitri's sister does something similar.  Except, where Rose and Dmitri truly loved and cared about each other, Dmitri's sister is being used by an asshole and she has no idea.  She truly believes he loves her and that she loves him.

Distance does not make the heart grow fonder.  Which is why most high school couples break up when they get to college (besides the fact that you become a different person in college).  Adrian adores Rose, but when she's gone it's easier to let her go.  It doesn't mean that he doesn't care about her, but it's hard to keep a burning love for someone when you can't act on it regularly.

Shadow Kiss gets a Fake Steph Rating of...
So far.
Don't forget that I'm in detention.  Leave your suggestions on how I should serve it in the comments.

Top Ten (Tuesday) Most Visit Worlds or Settings in Books

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish that combines lists and books.  This weeks topic is... most vivid worlds or seetings. As always, covers link to GoodReads.

These settings and worlds were made so integral to the story that they literally could not have happened anywhere else.  They set the mood and created these amazing atmospheres for these stories to really play out.  I don't think it's a coincidence that all of these books really resonated with me.

Pushing the Limits by Katie McGarry

I saw this over and over again as a Waiting On Wednesday pick, so when I saw it on NetGalley, I had to request it.  I'm so glad I did.  FYI:  This review will probably have some gushing.

Book: Pushing the Limits by Katie McGarry (will be released on July 31 by Harlequin Teen)

Summary:  Echo can't remember the night she almost died, when she earned her horrible scars and the restraining order that keeps her mother away from her.  Noah is a foster kid who has been through a series of terrible homes after the death of his parents, but he is determined to gain custody of his two little brothers when he turns 18.  They should both be golden, but life has left them damaged.  When they meet through their clinical social worker, Mrs. Collins, they might be exactly what they both needs to get them through the worst parts of life.

Characters:  Echo and Noah are two of my new favorite characters.  Echo is smart and funny, but she's also scared and scarred and vulnerable.  She's not only struggling with understanding what happened to her, but she's terrified that she is bi-polar, like her mom.  Noah is tough on the outside, but only out of necessity.  When someone becomes important to him--like Echo or his brothers--he will do anything for them, putting them before himself every single time.  I read an e-galley on my kindle and the formatting was messed up so there was no indicator to mark when we switched narrators.  The only reason I mention this is because the voices were so distinct that I always knew when the switch happened within two sentences.

There are too many characters to talk about them all, but I'll hit some of the highlights.  Every single one of the characters was well drawn and well developed, even Aries, Echo's dead brother who only exists in memory.  Echo's father is controlling and strict, but it's clear that he is struggling with guilt over what happened to Echo and that it is his messed up way of showing that he loves her.  Isaac and Beth were friends-as-family for Noah.  They both had lives just as messed up as Noah's, but they cared about each other and looked out for each other.  Beth's story will come out in 2013 under the title Dare You To, and seriously, I can not wait, although I did tweet Katie McGarry begging her for more Isaac.

Echo's mom is probably one of the worst mothers ever and completely selfish, but she is not evil... just broken on the inside.  There are plenty of character like this and it reminded me of what Noah and Echo could become if they don't deal with the terrible things that have happened to them.  Luckily, Echo's mom is balanced by Mrs. Collins, their social worker/counselor who is determined to help Echo and Noah.  She keeps her promises, is tough, and never backs down.  She lets them make their own decisions and takes the time--whether it is an hour or weeks or months--to get them to understand why the adults in their life want them to make certain choices.  Every person deserves a Mrs. Collins in their life, but she's the kind of person who is so often missing from great stories.  She ties Isaac for my favorite non-narrator character.

Plot/Pacing:  A lot of times it feels like contemporaries move slower, because it is more about the internal journey, but Pushing the Limits moves fast.  We get these intense journeys for both Echo and Noah, but at the same time, there is a ton going on for both of them.  Not only is Echo dealing with the loss of her brother (death) and mother (restraining order), but she's obsessed with fixing up her brothers old car, her dad is expecting a new baby with her old nanny, and she has decided to give her old social scene a try.  Noah is obsessed with getting custody of his brothers, but he's still dealing with the death of his parents, protecting Beth from her mother's abusive boyfriends, and working a full time job.

There is a ton going on for both of them and they think the answers can be found in Mrs. Collins file.  In fact, much of the story is centered around them trying to break into her files, which added a goal to a story that I would have read anyway.  It always felt like both characters had a lot to lose and I cried a lot.  The book played me and I loved every minute of it.

Moments I Loved:  Okay, there are SO MANY FREAKING MOMENTS that I could write about here.  BUT... my favorite moment is when Noah takes Echo out on a date for the first time.  Her dad hears that he's a foster kid and kind of shuts down, thinking that this guy is bad news.  Then, when he realizes that Noah isn't repulsed or ashamed by Echo's scars, something Echo's father has never been able to get past himself, he extends Echo's curfew.  Since Echo's dad is super strict (crazy strict!), I can't think of a better way to show that he trusts Noah and wants someone who actually cares about his daughter in her life.

WTF Moments: Echo's old boyfriend (not Noah) brings her on a date to see a war movie where a soldier is killed by an IED within the first few minutes.  Yes, bring the girl who is grieving for her marine brother who was killed by an IED to the war movie.  There aren't words bad enough to describe how I felt about this boy during this scene.

Overall:  I cried throughout most of this book and loved every minute of it.  Noah and Echo are amazing characters within a sea of amazing characters in really tough situations.  I'm officially a fan of Katie McGarry and plan on reading everything she writes, ever.

Sunday's In Bed With... Blood Promise

Sundays in bed with is hosted by Kate at Midnight Book Girl.  This week... I have officially cleaned my room and all of the books that had been in my bed are put away.  We'll see how long this lasts.  This week... surprise, surprise, I'm in bed with...

I took it out of the library, because the copy I had ordered was taking too long.  Then, I got home and found it in my  mailbox.  Yes!  I'm about to enter Revision Hell and it is going to be awesome, but for today... I'm going to curl up and read this book.

Steph on Saturday

I think I may start rotating these personal posts in with Looks From Books and my Book Boyfriend Stealing.   So... something personal about me.  How about two things?

Something That Makes Me Crazy: 911 calls being released.

Seriously.  I hate this.  I hate this SO MUCH.  To the point that I will most likely wait until it is TOO LATE if I ever need to call 911.  I value my privacy.  I think a lot about how much of myself I "put out there" and the idea that a recording of me at my most vulnerable, freaking out during an emergency, will be released for public inspection and ridicule.... it makes me sick.

Something That Makes Me Happy: Dressing up.

I'm a big fan of costumes.  From theme parties to things like the Great Urban Race where you have to create a team uniform, I think it is so much fun.  Yes, costumes are silly, but I love the idea of showing your committment to having a good time.  In my experience, people who absolutely refuse to dress up are so concerned with what people will think of them that they never have any fun.  Life can be so serious that I think it's important to prioritize having fun.

This was my poor attempt at Ke$ha last Halloween.  I totally wish I had gone bigger with the eye make up.  And I don't know how you beautiful girls with curls do it... I seriously thought I was going to have to shave my head to get the tangles out.  It didn't help that I grabbed the wrong can and had been spraying my hair with moose instead of hairspray.

Weekend Hops - July 20

Book Blogger Hop
What’s the ONE super-hyped book you’ll NEVER read?

Fifty Shades of Gray.  I'm sorry.  (I'm not.)  Even people who like it say that it is poorly written.  If I want to read erotica, I'll find a book blogger who reads erotica and buy one of their recommendations.  I feel absolutely no pressure to read something with no value just because everybody else is doing it.  That's a terrible reason to do anything (right up there with "That's the way it's always been done.")

Throwback TGIF: Pick a previous question you posted on your blog in the past & revisit your answer. Has it changed since then?

I picked.... Required Reading: Which book from your school days do you remember reading & enjoying? Is there a book published now that you'd like to see in today's curriculum for kids?

I wrote that I love The Great Gatsby and, yep, still love it.  So jazzed for the new movie.  I also thought that John Green should be a part of a school's curriculum.  While that is totally true, I also think kids should read The Scorpio Races.

St. Vladimir's Summer School, Week 3: Shadow Kiss by Richelle Mead

ST-VLADIMIR-vampire-academy-14330157-800-531

It's the third week of St. Vladimir's Summer School, where I'm reading through the Vampire Academy novels with  Ashelynn, Jen Ryland, and Jen from Owl Read It.  We're on week three and book three, but if you want to join in, feel free to jump in where ever you want.  NOTE: If you read book three, HAVE BOOK FOUR READY!

Total Progress: 3/6

Vocab - (Confused?  Check out my previous posts.)
Spirit - The rare fifth magical element that both Lissa and Adrian specialize in.  It allows them unheard of levels of compulsion and abilities like healing (Lissa) and meeting people in dreams (Adrian).

Compulsion - A Moroi ability, usually posessed in low levels, that allows them to incluence others.

Adrian - My boyfriend.

Book: Shadow Kiss (Vampire Academy#3) by Richelle Mead

Summary: Rose is at risk of not graduating when her temper grows out of control and she starts seeing the ghost of a friend whose death she feels responsible for.  Is he out for revenge or warning her of a greater evil on the way?

Brief thoughts:
This ending is the break-your-heart/call-to-adventure type that I love.  Mead pulls it off perfectly and I am DYING for Blood Promise.  Something else... my favorite part of this series so far has been watching vampire society slowly change.  There is some serious oppression going on that everyone just accepts and in this book we start to see Rose (among others) question the way things are done.  I love that.  Now, on to the important stuff....

Adrian... be still my heart.  He totally made this book for me.  I think what makes me like him so much is that he is this damaged guy who is totally self-destructive (I love the bad boys), but he doesn't use it as a wall to hide behind.  He is sweet and goofy in the way lovable nerds are usually written, but he's well dressed and funny and he smokes and he drinks.  He's this amazing mashup of literary heart throb.  In this book, I also really like Christian.  He's so good for Lissa and even though they have their problems, they truly love each other.  I really like that their relationship is normal and not some epic battle to be together (except for the normal teenage drama).

Once again, my biggest issue is with Dmitri.  I understand why people love him, but I can't get past the fact that he is Rose's teacher.  It creeps me out how quickly they go from equals sharing a bond, to Dmitri pulling rank and Rose being a brat to annoy him.  It doesn't feel like this is for show, to keep their relationship secret (which is a red flag in and of itself), and this struggle for power, specifically, is what makes me uncomfortable.  It is not just the knowledge that he is her teacher.  I'm pretty sure that I would feel the same way if he were her boss.  However, this book did a good job of helping me forget my reservations.  I found myself being swept along with Rose and devastated at the way things played out.

What I learned about Romance (after all, we are in summer school):
Guys, I get the attraction between Rose and Dmitri, so please don't take this the wrong way.  BUT I feel like a PSA is in order.  Dmitri is a compelling love interest, narratively speaking, but in real life, not so much.  Plus, the biggest lesson I can think of is "If you give your heart to someone, there is every possibility it can break", because there are a million ways to shatter a heart and it has nothing to do with whether you are loved back.  And that is depressing.

HOW TO TELL THAT YOU ARE IN AN UNHEALTHY RELATIONSHIP
1. You don't tell your best friend.  Rose can read Lissa's mind.  She knows everything about her and knows that Lissa will love her unconditionally.  Yet, she never tells her about Dmitri.  In fact, she is terrified that Lissa will find out and goes out of her way to keep it a secret from her.  I think one of the main reasons that Rose's relationship with Dmitri is so troubled is that she's never able to process what is going on by talking about it with someone.
2. You can be blackmailed with the information.  Seriously, if your relationship is so shameful that someone can coerce you into doing something you don't want to do with the threat of telling people about said relationship... I really can't believe this is even going on the list.
3. He's your teacher.  Rose specifically uses the word teacher in this book.  And then she does community service as detention and Dmitri joins her.  She thinks it feels like a date.  No, it's detention.  There is a priest there and you need to go on more dates.
4. You're changing who you are.  Obviously, you're going to change as you grow and different people influence you, but if you are throwing away important parts of yourself, that is a problem.  Dmitri is honest, that is a huge part of who he is, and Rose comments on how it is killing him that he has to lie under oath.  Sacrificing who you are is not romantic.

Now that THAT is over... MORE ADRIAN.  (I'm like Christopher Walken and his cowbell).  I wonder if Siri can pronounce "Little Dhampir"?
