School Reading

No formal book review today, because I've been doing lots of homework (also I'll be posting a scary review for Bloggers Dressed In Blood tomorrow).  Here's my thoughts on some of what I've been reading for school...  Beowulf--At the time, I truly believed that I would ever read anything that I hated as much as I hate Beowulf.

Why did anyone think it was a good idea to translate this thing?
Then, I read Gilgamesh.  I know that they are important historical texts and that I should appreciate them, but I don't. At all.  I also read an old text of Genesis, which was... less than enjoyable.  Sorry, World Lit.

I've read some other stuff--sonnets, background information, Up From Slavery, Some Stephen Crane and Jack London.  I liked the sonnets best, but nothing is really sticking out in my head as memorable.  I miss reading for fun.  A lot.  I'm currently reading My Antonia and it doesn't suck.  Maybe four lit classes in one semester was a bad idea?

What is your least favorite school reading assignment?

  1. That is an awful lot of lit classes at once, Steph! Although Beowulf was not fun, I do remember reading Grendel for Reading Team, which probably made me less go, hero! when I finally read Beowulf...

You'll get to read for fun this weekend! You're still coming, right? Right?!

  2. Um I loved Beowulf and Grendel by John (someone.... BUT I hated Beowulf UNTIL I got to my college class where we dissected each line....in Old English. Then again I'm a huge dork so it was cool. ;) I haven't read My Antonia - please let us know how to it turns out.

And I also had to translate stuff from the Bible from Latin, Old English, Middle English and Modern English. Yeaaa i'm a dork ;)

  4. Ugh, I'm so sorry! There's nothing like reading something bad because you HAVE to. It just makes it even more awful!

  5. This question is too easy. I hated As I Lay Dying by (I'm too lazy to look it up, but I believe it was Faulkner) it was awful. I also hated Walden by Thoreau, I'm not sure I'm smart enough for that one. And I loathed, absolutely loathed, The Grapes of Wrath by Steinbeck. That was the absolute worst ever. Just thinking about that book gets me upset again!

  6. LOTS of lit! I remember liking Beowulf--the story, not the actual reading part because I think I remember that being pretty hard to read. I tend not to like old stuff like that. Good luck with the rest of the semester--hopefully you'll get more interesting things to read!
