Guys, today is Esther Day. I love you all. Really, I do. I never expected to make real life friends through blogging, but now I can't imagine that I won't meet even more awesome people (as in quantity, better quality isn't possible). DFTBA.
When a book goes “viral” (Hunger Games, Fifty Shades, Twilight), do you rush out to read it like everyone else, even if it’s not in your typical genre?Honestly, I've never even thought about this before. When a book interests me, I pick it up. When it doesn't... I don't. I picked up Hunger Games and Twilight long before they went "viral" and have no intention of picking up Fifty Shades, because I don't think it will be half as entertaining as the reviews of it that I've read. But, if a book goes viral that isn't my typical genre, but that does pique my interest, I will usually give it a try.
Do your reading habits change based on your mood? Do you read a certain genre if you are feeling depressed or happy?
Absolutely. Sometimes, when I'm depressed, I need a book that will help me cry for a reason different from the one that is making me depressed. Other times, I need a book that will cheer me up. Then, when I'm in a good mood, sometimes I like to laugh and sometimes I like to be swept up in adventure or romance. I definitely need to be in the right mood for certain books, but it's also one of those things that is very hard to define. I'll know it when I see it and all that.

"I know it when I see it and all that." is so true. I read books for varying reasons, and while I have to be in the right mood for a book, it doesn't mean that if I'm sad I read a sad book or if I'm sad it means I read a happy book. I'm all over the place!
ReplyDeleteAs you know, I gave in to 50 shades. Kate's fault. ;)
I would like to think that whether or not a book goes "viral" wouldn't sway my decision to read it or not. But I can be tragically stubborn. Which is why I didn't read Harry Potter until the Spring before Deathly Hollows came out.
ReplyDeleteI'm starting to think I need to be more selective about what I read based on mood. I think I'm always picking up books in the wrong mood.
ReplyDeleteThat's exactly how I choose my books, too! And most of the tie it works quite well, but sometimes I just look for a hilariosly funny book bcause I'd really need it but can't find one - that's my problem being a moody reader :)
ReplyDeleteI'm an old follower by the way and this is my FF:

I was lucky with both Twilight and Hunger Games too- I picked up Twilight simply because the cover caught my eye, and picked up Hunger Games because Stephenie Meyers posted about it on her website and it totally sounded like my type of book. Sometimes I jump on book bandwagons, but it really just depends, other times the hype puts me off a book or series.
ReplyDeleteMy mood sometimes dictates the genre of books I read, if I'm depressed or stressed I tend to reach for thrillers. If I'm happy I normally pick out happier books. But usually I just read whatever is around and don't think about genres so much.
I definitely am a mood reader! For instance, I'm still in the middle of my YA Contemporary Binge because I just NEEDED to read YA contemps! But that seems to be waning and I'll most likely jump into a nice Sci-Fi or dystopian soon. And I definitely think the fact that a book is viral makes me curious, but not necessarily curious enough to read the book if it doesn't sound like me. I'm still not going to read Fifty Shades unless someone literally puts the physical book in my hands and begs me to read it. (Which might happen--I have a friend who threatened she would do that.) But even then, I'd only finish it if I really wanted to.
ReplyDeleteOh, and I know it's not Esther Day anymore, but I love you and all my other blogger friends, too. It's such an awesome community to be a part of, regardless of the drama that pops up! DFTBA!
