What’s the ONE super-hyped book you’ll NEVER read?
Fifty Shades of Gray. I'm sorry. (I'm not.) Even people who like it say that it is poorly written. If I want to read erotica, I'll find a book blogger who reads erotica and buy one of their recommendations. I feel absolutely no pressure to read something with no value just because everybody else is doing it. That's a terrible reason to do anything (right up there with "That's the way it's always been done.")
Throwback TGIF: Pick a previous question you posted on your blog in the past & revisit your answer. Has it changed since then?
I picked.... Required Reading: Which book from your school days do you remember reading & enjoying? Is there a book published now that you'd like to see in today's curriculum for kids?
I wrote that I love The Great Gatsby and, yep, still love it. So jazzed for the new movie. I also thought that John Green should be a part of a school's curriculum. While that is totally true, I also think kids should read The Scorpio Races.

I 99.9% agree with you about 50 Shades of Grey. But that 0.01% is related to pure curiosity - I want to read it to just have a clue about what people are talking about.
ReplyDeleteWhile on vacation, Danny and I were listening to a radio station driving around Cleveland and they're hosting a 50 Shades book burning this weekend (I think...). While I don't typically believe in book burning, I think this is a semi-worthy exception. People are taking this book, much like they did Twilight too seriously. Why are women leaving their husbands because he's not Christian Grey? Absurdity... Sort of like watching a car wreck, no?
Hi -I completely agree with you. In fact, even if a book has my full attention and I love the genre, if it's poorly written it spoils the read -in fact I'd probably give up on it.
ReplyDeleteI agree that there is way better erotica out there then 50 Shades so you should not feel pressured to read it. I'm getting ready to read another erotica novel, Dirty by Megan Heart, and I am very nervous!
ReplyDeleteI also agree that The Great Gatsby should be required reading and I am glad that it is. When you really dissect how it was written, the point of view the author chose, the irony that is depicted through out and the symbolism scattered through out the novel, it is a book that everyone should read especially future writers. I may not have enjoyed the story because I need my characters to be likable, but I can still appreciate it for what it is.
Is it bad that I actually told some people at the bookstore that they were wasting their money on 50 Shades? Yeah, not reading that.
ReplyDeletePersonally, did not like The Great Gatsby, but I loved Lord of the Flies!
Okay, seriously, are you being paid my Maggie Stiefvater to plug Scorpio Races? ;)
ReplyDeleteAs for Fifty Shades... I don't really regret reading it because it led to a fun book club conversation. Plus, as horribly repetitive and poorly written as it is, I think it's helped women feel empowered to read trashy smut if they want to- and to purchase it out in the open. Hopefully they'll go on to read trashy smut that's well written, but there does seem to be lots of people (and I would hazard to guess that these are people who admit that normally they are not readers) who do think Fifty Shades is a fantastic book. But then again, lots of bloggers like Need by Carrie Jones, and I think that book is horrible. To each his/her own, I guess.
Probably my favorite book that I was assigned to read in school was The Outsiders. The fact that S.E. Hinton was such a young author, and how powerful the novel (and the movie) still is, was inspiring. I still feel like I know Ponyboy, Darry, and Sodapop. As for current books, I do agree John Green would be a great author for teens to read, and I also think the Hunger Games could be read in conjunction with Battle Royale to encourage kids to read translated books too. ;)
"Okay, seriously, are you being paid my Maggie Stiefvater to plug Scorpio Races? ;) LOL, Kate! ;)
DeleteTotally agree on 50 shades. I really need to read TFIOS. Thanks girlie for stopping by my blog!
ReplyDeleteI read the Fifty Shades series (well, parts. I skipped many pages, because boy.. the writing style!) because of the hype, to be honest. v_v I just wanted to know what everyone was so fussed up about. XD But I absolutely agree with you - If you want to read (well-written) erotica or erotic romance, ask bookbloggers who like the genre. The Fifty Shades series was (imo) as hot as Voldemort in the first HP movie.

That's a popular answer today :) I have to say I agree.
ReplyDeleteGreat post! Check out my post.
I totally agree. Some of my friends have read 50 Shades and loved it, some hated it, and I'm pretty sure I know I wouldn't enjoy it! From what I've read around (and I tried to read a lot to make an informed decision!) just doesn't sound like it's for me!
ReplyDeleteOooh I didn't know John Green was getting incorporated at schools! That's great! I think I really enjoyed Gatsby when I was in high school :)
The answer today is almost unanimous. :)
ReplyDeleteLooks like I also agree with the most popular answer of the day!!! :) I have no interest in the book at all.
It was all over the bookstores in Scotland....front and center. UGGH.
Stop by my blog for my full answer if you like.

The Great Gatsby literally is one of my favorite books ever!! I am also SO excited to see the movie..especially since Leonardo Dicaprio is in it :)
ReplyDeleteHappy reading and thanks for stopping by my blog!!
Obviously I agree with The Great Gatsby and any of John Green's books would be an excellent choice and I have yet to read The Scorpio Races (please don't hurt me).
ReplyDeleteI'm with Kate that I don't regret reading Fifty Shades but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone and I certainly don't think you're missing out on anything for not reading it.
dude, no. 50 shades . . . ew. If you want GOOD BDSM, read The Siren by Tiffany Reisz. Tis very very good. Which I think you know because you read my review of it ha ha ha.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you about 50 Shades. Just reading other people's updates is MORE than enough for me.
ReplyDeleteI sent The Scorpio Races to my nieces and nephews of varying ages and they have all loved it.
Nice answer! I feel the same. If I want to read erotica I'll pick something that's actually well written!
ReplyDeleteI totally agree about The Great Gatsby! It was SUCH a good book. I can't wait to see the movie, I hope it's fantastic!
ReplyDeleteThanks for hopping by!
I really don't think I'll enjoy 50 Shades, and several people have told me that they don't think I'll enjoy it, either. Mostly because of the poorly-written/grammatical errors thing. Yeesh! But also, I get bored when 2 YA characters make out for more than a page. Let's move it along please! Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the romance aspect of almost all books these days, but I think I would get tired of all the sex scenes.
ReplyDeleteHowever, one of the girls in my book club has Double-Dog Dared me to read it. And those things are kinda binding, aren't they? ;) Eh, I don't know. If someone put the book in my hands and said, "Here, just give it 50 pages" I'd probably do it. I don't think there's any book that I'd say that I'd never read. But that's one book that I won't be buying or checking out from the library for myself.
John Green books would definitely make for interesting and thoughtful discussions in class. And I'm pleased you also picked out The Scorpio Races - I love that book and I love Maggie!
