Welcome to summer school. This is what happens when you spend too much time on Twitter and have friends like Ashelynn and Jen. We'll be spending the summer reading through the Vampire Academy series. This is the first time I've read through them and so far, I'm loving it. I finished the first book on Saturday and immediately ordered the second, but, because of the weekend and today's silly national holiday, it won't be here until tomorrow or Friday. Today is my first check in and Saturday will be a special edition of Looks From Books.
Total Progress: 1/6
Vocab
Moroi - Basically upperclass vampires. While all vampire royalty are Moroi, not all Moroi are royalty. They are mortal, can wield magic, and need blood, but only take it from willing victims.
Dhampir - human/vampire hybrid, they aren't affected by the sun and don't need blood, but can only have children with Moroi. They have extra speed/strength and act as guardians to the Moroi.
Strigoi - Your basic immortal, super strong, and super evil vamp. Most used to be Moroi (maybe all... I don't know if Strigoi can have children). They are gaining the upperhand.
Shadow-kissed - Defining this one would kind of be a spoiler.
Book: Vampire Academy (Vampire Academy#1) by Richelle Mead

Book: Vampire Academy (Vampire Academy#1) by Richelle Mead
Summary: Lissa (Moroi princess) and her best friend and guardian Rose (Dhampir) have been on the run, but are finally forced back to Vampire Academy (St. Vlads, technically, I guess). The girls are forced to navigate the complicated world of prep school AND vampire politics all while trying to figure out who is leaving dying animals for her to find. On top of this Lissa has the unheard of ability to heal and is slowly going crazy, while Rose is falling in love with her super sexy mentor, Dmitri!
Brief thoughts: This book is way more intense than I expected. Never mind the drugs and alcohol, which was pretty realistic, Rose has absolutely no respect for her body at the beginning of the novel and Lissa is struggling from depression so sever that she cuts herself. My heart went out to both of them. I definitely remember what it was like to be a teen and I think both Rose and Lissa are easy to relate to. While, I didn't like the way Rose's approach towards boys is explained away at the end, I did appreciate the slow way she learned the consequences of her actions and attitudes and how to respect herself. Lissa was harder to read about, but I loved that Richelle Mead always made it clear that no matter how Lissa interpreted things, that she was never alone.
I had a little bit of trouble watching the romance between Rose and her much older mentor, Dmitri. On one hand, it's nice to have a swoonworthy guy in YA who wouldn't be jailbait in the real world. On the other, it's a completely inappropriate relationship, but once again Mead handles it well and I was satisfied with the decision the characters make at the end of the book.
Overall, I loved getting to know the characters and watching the mystery unfold. There were quite a few times I was surprised and the action at the end is both exciting and heartbreaking. The world is realistic and kind of messed up, but in a way that reflects parts of our own society. This is the kind of book you could read as fluff if you wanted to, but that you could dissect over coffee and never run out of things to talk about.

What I learned about Romance (after all, we are in summer school):
If you're obvious about your feelings, then people will use it against you. I won't go into too much detail, because I don't want to spoil it for you, but if you have a forbidden romance, either consequences be damned or keep it to yourself. If you're not going to commit to either, then you are setting yourself up for really sad and messed up situations.
You can't respect a potential love interest until you respect yourself. Rose has no respect for herself at the beginning of the book, but she also has no respect for the boys who she flirts and makes out with. By the end of the book, she has given value to herself and only then is she truly able to feel something for someone else. I mean... she totally picked the worst guy ever (for her situation), but she wouldn't have been able to do that if she hadn't dealt with her own issues first.

It was going to get a 4 kiss rating, but because I'm stressing so much while waiting for book two,
Vampire Academy gets a Fake Steph Rating of...

I hope Frostbite shows up for you soon! It is so addictive, right? I'm not sure how I read a few books and stopped.
ReplyDeleteDimitri is way older than her, which kind of emphasizes how impulsive she still is and how much she has to learn. But that's part of her charm, I guess.
Adrian turns up in book two, which I had forgotten :)
I thought I was going crazy when Adrian didn't show up, because that's one of the names I hear people rave about. I can't wait for book two. Should be here tomorrow, but I'll be off visiting my sister who is having a baby. :)
DeleteMy favorite PNR ever!!! I love this series so much. Great idea for a summer reading challenge!
ReplyDeleteI'm really enjoying it. Thanks!
DeleteI don't think Strigoi can have children. They have to be made, I believe!
ReplyDeletealso: DIMITRI. <3 oh god I love him so much. But I love the forbidden relationship between student/teacher, older/younger. Like Pretty Little Liars! Ezra's and Aria's relationship is my favorite.
I looooove that you loved this one and are anticipating Frostbite so much! it makes me want to forget everything and read the rest of the series RIGHT NOW.
I would totally be reading the rest of the series right now... if the books were here. :) And I hope the Strigoi can't have children since they're immortal and all that could be very bad.
DeleteThis is one type of summer school I can get behind! I haven't read any of these, but I'm glad you enjoyed the first one. I really need to check it out myself.
ReplyDelete-Lauren
Yeah, check them out! I don't know why I put it off so long (*cough* covers *cough*), but I'm glad I finally committed to read them!
DeleteThis is such a fun idea for summer! I loved Vampire Academy when I first read it and whipped through the first 4 books...then I hit a stumbling block and stalled. I really need to finish up this series to see how things end. Maybe I'll try and do that this summer.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely do it! Jen, Ashelynn, and I will be reading them all summer and there is certainly worse company. :)
DeleteHmm, I is looking forward to summer school with Dimitri!
ReplyDeleteWish I could take a real class with him.
DeleteMan, I didn't know you guys were doing this. I need to read this series but I keep putting it off. :( Have fun!
ReplyDeleteDo it!
DeleteWhat an AWESOME idea for a summer read-a-thon! I LOVE IT. I really came to adore this series. I wasn't a big fan of the first book, but by about the middle of the second book, man, was I hooked! I think it's a great point that you brought up about Rose. She really does grow a lot over the course of the series, as well as learns to respect herself. Good call!
ReplyDeleteI loved watching Rose grow in the first book and can't wait to see where her character goes in Frostbite.
DeleteGreat post, I really enjoyed this series and glad you are too.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with your points about Rose learning slowly... but isn't that real life.
Brandi from Blkosiner’s Book Blog
Totally. I loved Rose and her growth. I'm enjoying it too. I'm impatiently waiting for my next book. It's in the mail and I won't be home tomorrow when it is supposed to be delivered.
DeleteThis is such a great idea! I haven't read any of these books, but have heard great things and have been wanting to read them. I'm going to try to read and follow along with you three!
ReplyDeleteYes! It's a strange and wonderful experience to read something at the same time as other people. It makes reading more... social. This is the closest I have ever come to book club. :)
DeleteCUTE IDEA LADIES! I like it. I have never read these books, but I know people Loooovvvveeee them!
ReplyDeleteI won't be reading the books because I have so many others to get to but I'm really looking forward to reading all your guys posts on them. I'm really curious about that shadow kiss. You'll have to divulge that later for me. ;)
ReplyDeleteIt's pretty fun reading through these review backwards, because I'm all like "just wait how creeped out you will be by their relationship later, and I know this for a fact!" Teacher/student...like I get why people like it, but I seriously can't turn off the part of my brain that says INAPPROPRO!
ReplyDeleteI had totally forgotten about how Rose would hook up with anyone. And Lissa cutting! That too. Boys solve your mental problems. Right.
I haven't read this series but the first book is on my TBR list! I hope you're enjoying all of them!
ReplyDeleteI do agree with you that if you don't respect (or love) yourself, you can't respect (or love) another. I think that life in general has pretty much proven that to be true, but why is that? I mean, seriously, why? Why can't I love some one and want to do everything for them and respect them and all that, and yet still treat myself like crap? I'm not saying that I want to do that, but when you really start to think about it....why?
ReplyDeletehmm...I'm going to be pondering that for a while...
